The Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) began producing sterndrives in 1962. The first model, the Stringer outdrive, was produced between 1962 and 1968. In the 1970s, OMC introduced the 400 and 800 series hydromechanical shift, which evolved into the 400 and 800 series full-mechanical shift models. In 1986, OMC introduced the Cobra and King Cobra models, which ran until 1993. Finally, in 1998, OMC sold the sterndrive division to Volvo Penta, officially ending the OMC sterndrive business.
