Chrysler started out in the Marine business by making engines for other manufacturers. Chrysler acquired a 413,000 square foot facility in Hartford, Wisconsin, and employed 500 people. The 1980s government bailout forced Chrysler’s parent corporation to sell off their non-core businesses, so in 1983, Chrysler Corporation sold the profitable outboard division to Bayliner’s US Marine, which changed the brand name to Force Outboards. In 1986, Force was acquired by the Brunswick Corporation, owners of Mercury Outboards.
