Determining The Year of Your Outboard

Determining The Year of Your Outboard

Every brand of outboard manufacturer uses their own code to determine the year of their outboards. We have gathered all the manufacturers model and serial number code information here in one place as a resource for you to quickly determine the year of your outboard.

We have also included links to the OEM manufacturers part catalogs for you to know the factory OEM part numbers you are trying to replace.

If you are still having trouble, you are welcome to send us a email with your model and serial number

OMC / Johnson / Evinrude / BRP

OMC (Johnson & Evinrude) have changed how they indicate the year in the model number several times. Depending on the year range your motor falls into, you will find your engine year information differently.

OMC outboard motor engine numbers can usually be found on the nameplate ID tag located on the clamp or swivel bracket of the engine. The ID tag will contain a model number and a serial number. OMC uses the model number to identify the year and certain options of that engine.

Engines since 1980 use a two letter code at the end of the model number based on the following key:

I  N  T  R  O  D  U  C  E  S
1  2  3  4  5  6   7  8  9  0

For Example: The 'CE' at the end of the model number J100STLCE indicate that the engine is from 1989.

Similar to OMC, Yamaha Marine for many years used the model number to determine the year and identify the options of that particular engine.

PLEASE NOTE: Beginning in 2006, Yamaha stopped using model year code. You can find the manufacturing date on the opposing clamp bracket from the ID Tag with the model and serial number.

Internationally Coded Yamaha Marine Engines

You can reference this chart to determine the year of an internationally coded Yamaha engine:

D - 1990, C - 1991, B - 1992, A - 1993, Z - 1994, Y - 1995, X - 1996, W - 1997, V - 1998, U - 1999

T - 2000, S - 2001, R - 2002, Q - 2003, P - 2004, N - 2005, K - 2006, J - 2007, H - 2008, G - 2009

F - 2010, D - 2011, C - 2012, B - 2013, A - 2014, Z - 2015, Y - 2016, X - 2017

If you are outside the USA we can only help if you have original OEM Yamaha part numbers.

Unlike OMC and Yamaha, Mercury Marine uses the serial number to determine the year of the engine and the model number to determine the features. The serial number allows you to find parts for your outboard based on year and horsepower.

For example, Mercury manufactured more than 120 different models and variants of 225HP outboard in 2006.

While one water pump repair kit might fit some of those models, there’s no guarantee it's compatible with your motor if you order it without knowing your outboard's exact serial number.

The sequence of letters and numbers (or just numbers) at the top of the identification tag or instruction plate is your Mercury outboard’s serial number.

Mercury Serial Numbers To Years Chart

Later Model Mercury engines will have 2-digit number in a box at the lower right portion of the label.These digits coincide with the last two digits of the year in which the outboard was manufactured. For example, if an outboard was manufactured in 2010, the number "10" would appear in the box at the lower right portion of the label.

Mercury Model Numbers

NOTE - Many Mercury ID tags will have a tag similar to the one pictured below.

The "model number 1F10451HK, is NOT the "model number" we need to help you.

It is below the serial number and will begin with the HP and will contain numbers and letters.

The following diagram correctly shows the model number needed to identify the options on a Mercury engine.

 This chart will help you identify the options on Mercury engines:

For motors produced in 2003 and beyond, the serial number (6 numbers + 2 letters) will indicate the Production Year of the motor using the 2 letter code at the end of the serial number. Look up each letter in the table below to determine the production year:

Example Serial Number: 123456XF
Production Year = 2006

A  B  C  D  E  F  G  H  K  X
1  2  3   4  5  6  7  8   9  0

For Nissan and Tohatsu engine produced prior to 2003. Please fill out the form on Tohatsu's website: Motor Option Reference

E = Electric Start
EF = Electric Start, Tiller Handle
EP = Electric Start, Remote Steering
EFO = Electric Start, Tiller Handle, Oil Injected
EFT = Electric Start, Tiller Handle, Power Trim (& Tilt)
EPO = Electric Start, Remote Steering, Oil Injected
EPT = Electric Start, Remote Steering, Power Trim (& Tilt)
EPTO = Electric Start, Remote Steering, Power Trim (& Tilt), Oil Injected
F = Fisherman = Tiller Handle
G = Gas Assist Manual Tilt
M = Manual Start
MF = Manual Start, Tiller Handle
O = Oil Injected
